WEEK 34

Hi there!

Week 33 in the pregnancy was certainly one for the books! Over the weekend, my mom and in-laws came in town for Clay’s baby shower! The entire weekend was wonderful; Granny and Poppa (Jim’s parents) brought us our changing table - Poppa made it 4 years ago and each of the Morgan / Fernihough babies will / have used it. It was neat to see that we were carrying on a family tradition AND that fits in perfectly with our décor! Saturday was the baby shower which was hosted by wonderful friends who were far too generous and thought of every last detail!

The shower was fantastic and it was obvious that Clay is loved by a lot of very cool chicks! Sunday my mom got all of Clay’s clothes and blankets washed and we worked together to get them folded and put away. That was a HUGE load off of my plate.

That takes us to Monday. Monday was a little bit crazier than any other day last week; bottom line is everything / everyone (especially Clay) is okay but we got a test run of what D-day will be like. I had a little bit of cramping on my way to work but just wrote it off as bathroom stuff. Then throughout the morning I had a stomach ache that had my stomach really hurting and by 11, I’d thrown up (sorry to share the glamorous details of pregnancy). At that point, I decided to call my doctor because I’d never experienced stomach pain with my morning sickness. My doctor had me go to my delivering hospital to meet her at Labor and Delivery. We got checked into the L&D triage room where it took two college educated adults a surprisingly long amount of time to figure out how to get me into a hospital gown (it was one sheet of material with tons of snaps and one tie – very strange). Then Clay and I got hooked up to a machine to monitor his heart beat and my contractions. The entire time, we were told Clay’s heat beat made him look like a “happy baby” so that was a HUGE relief. I apparently was having contractions but hadn’t realized it because they just amounted to tensing in my stomach and Clay was so active, I just assumed it was all him. After that, they did some lab tests and I found out I was dilated to 1cm. From what I understand, you can stay at a one for anywhere between 4-6 weeks and my being dilated to a 1 does NOT mean that I will delivery early.

We ended up being at the hospital for about 3 hours (the first 1 ½ hours, we didn’t realize that there was a TV in our room so we were just bored out of our minds – so again, a nice thing to know for the real deal); the lab results didn’t show anything that was concerning so they think I was probably dehydrated and that caused contractions to start. I don’t know how much I am buying into that because they think me getting sick made me dehydrated (but lab results didn’t show that I was dehydrated) and all of the other symptoms started before I got sick so who knows. I go back to my doctor tomorrow for a follow up so maybe she’ll shed more light on it. I took yesterday off and am leaving work early the next couple of days. My focus is to just take it easy, get lots of rest and to drink gallons of water.

So our big adventure means a lot of good news: 1) Clay is safe and healthy. 2) We know how to get me into the hospital gown. 3) We know how to work the TV. 4) For D-day we know “the drill”. 5) I already answered a lot of questions for the hospital that are now in their system so I won’t have to try and remember answers when I’m having painful contractions. 6) My doctor kept saying, if it is time to deliver, 34 weeks is NOT a scary time to have a baby so from here on out, Jim and I will breathe a little bit easier.

I am definitely hoping for a much less eventful week this week. It’s crazy to think that we’re about 6 weeks away from meeting the little guy; please just send up lots of prayers that he stays put until he is fully “cooked”.

I hope all is well!

Much love,

Erin
